My Christmas Colourpop order

Hey loves,
After doing my Make Up Geek order on Christmas Day I decided I would do a Colourpop order. As I mentioned with MUG, shipping to Australia costs a pretty penny- ColourPop is the worst in regards to the price- I paid a whopping $20 USD which is about $30 AUD.
I do have a lot of the shadows so I wanted to get some of the liquid lipsticks. I absolutely adored the colours from the millions of swatches online.
The liquid lips are $6 USD each. The Foxy collection was $20 USD. The eyeshadow was $5 USD.

I purchased this to support the Best Friends Animal Society. It's a great base colour. I'd recommend you getting it purely to support the cause.
Colourpop always leaves a cute note with your order.
All products
Swatches.
Left is from the mini collection "Foxy"
Right is full sized liquid lipsticks

These liquid lipsticks are very wet. I personally prefer the more mousse type liquid lipstick as you have more time for a more precise application. These dry VERY fast. Its a race to get them on- especially if you are mixing colours. The formula feels almost "chalky" or powdery on the lips and you can actually feel them sitting there. They aren't the most comfortable liquid lip I've used and are in fact the most uncomfortable I've worn (barring the Jeffree Star "Masochist" disaster I own). They have killer staying power because of this and don't transfer.
I probably won't be rushing to purchase anymore and would much prefer to use their amazing Lippie Stix instead.
Have you picked up any ColourPop? What do you have? Leave it in the comments below!

Until next time,
Gentle hugs
Bridget

Makeup Revolution New-trals vs Neutrals mini-review

Hi loves,

I have wanted this palette for awhile now. Makeup Revolution is a U.K brand that I have a few items from thanks to my British friends sending me some. I've been happy with everything I've tried. Unfortunately with being in Australia the exchange rate and the shipping puts me off doing an order as it becomes expensive. I found someone on eBay selling one brand new so I scooped it up. That was a disaster and a half with the seller not sending my item, seemingly re-selling it to someone else and not giving me my money back. Luckily eBay stepped in for me and I got a refund. I purchased this for $30 with a different eBay seller. The palette sells for 6.99 GBP which is roughly $15 AUD. With the conversions and shipping it equated to the same amount of money if I had bought it through Makeup Revolution. This is also known as a knock off for the Lime Crime Venus Palette.
Below are photos, swatches and my review!

Top row
From top to bottom:

  • Bias (you can barely see it. There isn't too much pigment to it)
  • Neutral
  • Personal
  • Vogue
  • Trend
  • New-Tral
  • Tone
  • Custom

 Bottom Row
From Top to Bottom

  • Cool (once again cant see the colour too well)
  • Style
  • Partial
  • Mode
  • Adapt
  • Buff
  • Suit
  • Strong

Review points
  • All in all I am happy with this drugstore palette.
  • The packaging doesn't feel cheap, feels sturdy enough and looks nice.
  • The pigmentation is decent for the price, it does vary sightly with the lighter colours not showing up too well.
  • The shadows are buttery and don't feel chalky.
  • The brush included in the palette is surprisingly decent! It feels soft and I will actually use it.
  • The colour names come on a sheet of clear plastic which I dislike. I don't like keeping the plastic part.
Would I recommend the palette? If you are a makeup lover sure! I love the colours included in the palette- I don't have a palette like this. If you love the look of the Lime Crime Venus palette but don't want to support the brand (google Lime Crime Scandal for more info) then this is a good alternative.

My MakeUp Geek Christmas Order + Review

Hi loves,
For the past year I have wanted to do a MakeUp Geek order. Being in Australia, buying makeup overseas can be incredibly expensive with the shipping and conversion rate. So I held off on the order, dreaming of it as any makeup lover does. For Christmas I decided the only thing I wanted was a MakeUp Geek order (and a Colourpop one if I had spare cash!). On Christmas Day I spent a solid few hours on their website and picked the shades I felt would be every day wearable, as well as three I had to have for that pop of colour. Below are some photos and reviews on each different product.

I purchased a large black Z palette and filled it with MUG shadows. A large Z palette can fit 27 MUG shadows. Can you hear the angels with this palette? Lol. I am SO happy with most of my choices. I feel this is a good mix between warm and cool tones as well as a pop of colour.

Pictured below and the MUG Foiled eyeshadows. They are incredibly buttery, incredibly pigmented and so metallic. These are a must have! From top to bottom:
Pegasus
Caitlin Rose
Daydreamer
Whimsical
Hire Wire
In The Spotlight
Starry Eyed
Grandstand  (this is an absolute MUST)
Mesmerised
Showtime

These are the regular shadows. I have a mix between the shimmers and the mattes. Here are swatches below. From top to bottom the shadows are:
Brown Sugar
Cocoa Bear (this is a cult favourite with makeup lovers)
Cosmopolitan
Roulette
Taupe Notch
Mooniest
Graphite
Sensuous
Unexpected
Twilight
Cinderella
Peach Smoothie
Beaches and cream
Vanilla Bean
Shimma Shimma  (I think this is the perfect base colour for all skin tones)

The bottom shadows I knew would be very pale on my pale skin- I wanted some base lid colours. However Vanilla Bean is shocking. It's a matte and not anywhere near as pigmented as the other shadows I have. I am sure it'd look stunning on darker skin. A bad choice for me. I guess thats the risk in purchasing online!

Review:

  • I adore the Foiled eyeshadows. I am happy with the pigmentation, they are creamy and look incredible on. The best way to apply these is to pack them onto the lid with a synthetic brush.
  • I am not as happy with the matte shadows as I would like to be. In hindsight if I'd known they lacked the pigmentation that the others have, I might have opted to choose different shades. I also feel they are a little chalky.
  • I also purchased a Duochrome "Blacklight" which is a purple/silver/pink. I dig it hard.
  • The actual Z palette you can buy on the MUG website. I purchased mine on an Aussie website as the large black was sold out on MUG. It is sturdy, compact and the lid folds completely over.
  • If you haven't tried MakeUp Geek eyeshadows I recommend you do!

Standard eyeshadows are $6 USD
Foiled eyeshadows are $10 USD
Shipping from America to Australia cost me $11.99
I lost about $80 AUD in the conversion rate

2016 Monthly Angel Reading

Hey loves,

I stumbled across a post on Instagram of a women who had used angel therapy cards to guide her through her year. She picked a card for each month.
I decided to do the same. I picked the deck that called to me most (as I usually do that when I want guidance). I cleared my mind and would focus on each month whilst shuffling. I tend to allow the right cards to fall out of the deck instead of me picking them. I believe that this works best for me. Some months two cards would fall out. I also drew cards to "sum up" 2016.

I used the "Daily Guidance from your Angels"Oracle Cards by Doreen Virtue.

Reading Goals for 2016

Hey Loves,

Last year I had a wonderful year of reading. I managed to smash my original reading goal of 50 books and instead reading 109 books! Being chronically ill I'm home 24/7 and reading is something I can do when I'm stuck in bed with a flare. It's also a great way to distract myself when I'm in a lot of pain. Reading has been such a blessing!

My 2016 GoodReads Goal is again 100 books. A daunting task at the beginning of the year!
I also plan to once again do the M.S Readathon in August and hopefully raise awareness and some money for those fighting M.S.

Below is a list of books I want to have read by the end of 2016. These are books I wanted to read last year and didn't get a chance to read. As any book lover my TBR constantly grows!
(I realise Finding Audrey is on there twice).

I plan to post monthly my goals for at the beginning and how I went at the end.
Here's to a wonderful 2016 of reading and getting lost in amazing worlds.

Until next time,
Gentle hugs
Bridget

12 Week Keto Challenge

Hey Loves,
To understand my weight journey/saga I'd recommend you read My Weight Loss Surgery Story blog post.
So the last year or so I haven't been doing anything in regards to weight loss or mindful eating. I gave up. My fatigue has been awful and the idea of cooking a meal for myself and the payback didn't seem worth it. I relied on easy meals.
At my last doctors visit my doctor mentioned my weight and he knows how frustrated I am and how hard I've worked on losing weight (then having regained due to medication and a ruined metabolism thanks to weight loss surgery). He made a comment that when/if (I cant' remember what he used) my pre-diabetes (that I've had since birth) turns into diabetes he can offer me some different medications to help with my weight. He obviously doesnt want that to happen, neither do I. But its at the point where all hope is lost. So it triggered some concern in me and I decided to embark on mindful eating. I had looked into the Keto diet for the last year but was concerned that the meal prep and cooking would cause continual flares and that my body couldn't handle it. I felt like I was using it as an excuse even though at the time before embarking on my little challenge I was only cooking maybe once a week.
So with the timing I decided to begin a 12 Week Keto Challenge Jan 1 (as most failed diets do lol).
I went into it confident I could stick to it. Not really thinking about the fact that I am a spoonie and our energy levels are unpredictable.

What is Ketosis?
From Web MD
Ketosis is a normal metabolic process, something your body does to keep working. When it doesn't have enough carbohydrates from food for your cells to burn for energy, it burns fat instead. As part of this process, it makes ketones.
If you're healthy and eating a balanced diet, your body controls how much fat it burns, and you don't normally make or use ketones. But when you cut way back on your calories or carbs, your body will switch to ketosis for energy.
So what is the Keto Diet?
From Ruled ME
A keto diet is well known for being a low carb diet, where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy. It’s referred to as many different names – ketogenic diet, low carb diet, low carb high fat (LCHF), etc. When you eat something high in carbs, your body will produce glucose and insulin.
Glucose is the easiest molecule for your body to convert and use as energy, so it will be chosen over any other energy source.
Insulin is produced to process the glucose in your bloodsteam, by taking it around the body. Since the glucose is being used as a primary energy, your fats are not needed, and are therefore stored. Typically on a normal, higher carbohydrate diet, the body will use glucose as the main form of energy.
By lowering the intake of carbs, the body is induced into a state known as ketosis. Ketosis is a natural process the body initiates to help us survive when food intake is low. During this state, we produce ketones, which are produced from the breakdown of fats in the liver.
The end goal of a properly maintained keto diet is to force your body into this metabolic state. We don’t do this through starvation of calories, but through starvation of carbohydrates. Our bodies are extremely adaptive to what you put into it – when you overload it with fats and take away carbohydrates, it will begin to burn ketones as the main energy source.

I personally thought this sounded perfect for my body. And with that I started the Keto Diet....

Day One 1/1/16
I found it interesting that cooking my meals I was using "real" butter. After a lifetime of using low-fat, lite products this seemed so so wrong. But it tasted so so right. Day One meals are below. They were delicious and filling. I thought "wow if this is what its like this is a diet like no other!".  I experienced no headaches or symptoms of "Keto flu" with a lack of carbs.

Breakfast Day One

Lunch Day One

Dinner Day One  (Taco Bowl)

Day Two 2/1/16
I woke up, all guns blazing, ready to tackle day two. I experienced some gross yucky taste in my mouth, bad breath and a headache. I combatted that with drinking lots of sparkling mineral water with diet cordial (I cant drink flat water with my stomach). By that night my back was really angry at me. I was making all my meals sitting on my walker but I was still standing a lot. For my back, standing up in a killer. For those that don't know I have several Grade 2 slipped discs with nerve root compromisation. I am meant to have a spinal fusion but am refusing for my own reasons.

Breakfast Day 2

Lunch Day 2

Dinner Day 2 (Deconstructed Burgers)

Day Three 3/1/16
Day Three I woke up SORE. After some reading I found that carbohydrates contain magnesium which is vital for all bodies, but essential for someone with Fibromyalgia. I take two supplements a day (I ran out once. I know how much my body needs this from the sheer agony I was in without magnesium!). I was a little concerned about this and had an Epsom Salt bath. My sciatica from my back was severe, my hips were killing me and my numbness in my leg was a lot worse. Other then preparing meals/cooking I was at the point where I was laying flat for the rest of the day unable to do anything. In regards to my hunger I was finding I was eating less as I was always full. Something I rarely experience.

Breakfast Day 3 (couldn't eat most of it so saved it for lunch)

 Lunch Day 3

Dinner Day 3

Day Four 4/1/16
Today is where everything got too much. I was waking up in such severe pain, I had experienced nightmares that night (sign I'm flaring) and my energy levels were non-existent. By that afternoon I had hit a brick wall and knew I was headed for a big flare.

Breakfast Day 4

Lunch Day 4

I was SO upset with myself. Why had I thought I could prepare three meals a day if the previous week I was lucky to prepare one a week? Was this "just another failed diet"? I spoke to friends and family and reflected and decided that this type of diet is definitely what suits my body. But instead of being focused on getting into a stage of ketosis to lose weight, I would focus on whole foods, proper high fat and less carbs on a more relaxed diet. Being a spoonie you need to be flexible. It's just like when a spoonie makes plans. The day before I might be having a great day- but I wake up the day of the event and I'm so sick I can't get out of bed. My goal now is to cook at least once a day. Plan ahead with a food diary (which I was doing with Keto diet) and try and avoid carbs when I can. Maybe in the future I can commit to the Keto Diet full time, but at the moment I need to take baby steps. As a result for almost 4 full days of cooking 3 meals I am still in a severe flare and my back is still recovering. I am certain if I wasn't a spoonie I could rock this way of eating. But this is the way it is. I am sure some non-spoonies are thinking "just push past those few bad days" but it is literally impossible. When you can't physically get out of bed how are you meant to prepare a meal? I ended up having my mum come over and look after me.
I will continue to post food photos to my Instagram and will do blog posts with quick meal ideas for spoonies wanting to eat low carb. I'm still calling this a win. I fell incredibly short of a 12 week challenge- I didn't even make a week!
However, in those four days doing Keto/Low Carb, High Fat I learnt some valuable information about my body.

What I learnt:

  • Full fat foods are incredibly filling
  • My body doesn't like carbs such as pasta and potatoes
  • High Fat, Low Carb can be easy- it just takes research and effort which sometimes isn't possible being chronically sick.
  • I can push my body. Yes there are consequences, but sometimes they are worth it.
  • Small victories are big victories for spoonies.
Until next time,
Gentle hugs,
Bridget

Best books I read in 2015

In 2015 I managed to read 109 books! I would say this largely is because I'm housebound and often found I didn't know what to do with myself. I can say that I loved 90% of what I read in 2015. I'm going to discuss my highlights in reading in 2015, then list a snapshot of my favourite books of 2015. If you don't feel like reading scroll to the bottom of my quick list!

My one big flop was "Splintered" by A.G. Howard. I read this with my Facebook group (We Heart Books) and we found that people either loved it or hated it.

In January I read "Devil's Knot" and "Dark Spell" both by Mara Leveritt. These books are about the West Memphis 3 case in which three ten-year old boys were murdered and Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley Jr were accused of the crime. This case has always fascinated me so I loved reading more information about the lead up events and the trial.

I managed to re-read and catch up on the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I began reading these about five years ago when a Pre-School mum recommended them and let me borrow her copies. I have all twenty-two of them and love to read them. They are great to read if you're in a reading slump, want something quick to read and want a little giggle. In another life Stephanie and I are friends, I'm sure of it.

In August I began to re-read the Harry Potter series. I hadn't read it since I was a kid so it was VERY magical to pick these books up again. The first Harry Potter came out when I was 10. I remember my Librarian (yes I was that kid at school that was the librarian's friend) telling me I needed to read it and that it was going to be a very popular series. She wasn't wrong! I was hooked from the first chapter. So it's a very nostalgic series for me and I pride myself on being a fan from the first release! I'm currently up to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I don't want it to end....

I discovered Sarah J Maas this year and I can confidently say she is one of my favourite authors. I love her style of writing and her incredible world building. I LOVE Celaena and her kickass, smarts personality. I am now all caught up and DYING for book five! Queen of Shadow's is my favourite of the series so far.

My friend sent me A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness as a gift. She said it is her favourite trilogy. The books are massive and I was intimidated to start them but I am so glad I did. I am so glad she kindly sent book one to me. I purchased the rest and have read them all. I highly recommend them if you love witches with a side of history!

I also re-read and continued the Shadowhunters series. It may be an unpopular opinion but I cannot stand either Clary nor Jace. I struggled to read these and had to push myself to read them because I wanted to finish the series and also read The Clockwork Angel series. I much preferred that!

I began reading biographies this year. I used to always tease my mum about reading harrowing stories of abuse, wondering why you would subject yourself to it. But I found myself hooked. I found strength from these stories.

In a nutshell my top books were:

  • A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
  • Down the Rabbit Hole by Holly Madison
  • Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas
  • Hollywood Witch Hunter by Valeria Tejeda
  • A Stolen Life by Jacee Duggard
  • Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison
  • More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera
  • Dumplin' by Julie Murphy
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

So here's to 2016 and a wonderful reading year! I will discuss my reading goals for the year and books I'm excited to read in another post.
